Don't Rush to the Store! Create Your Own Buttermilk at Home No need for an emergency trip to the supermarket, learn how to make buttermilk with only two ingredients and five minutes of your time. This easy solution will give you the buttermilk you need for your recipe without having to leave the comfort of your home.
❃Does buttermilk make a difference in baking?
Buttermilk helps break down long strands of gluten and proteins in baked goods. That means every recipe that uses a splash of buttermilk is just a bit more tender than those that call for regular milk or water.
❃What Ingredients do I need?
Just 2 ingredients...that's it!
🥛Whole milk or 2% milk
🍋Freshly squeezed lemon juice or white distilled vinegar
❃How to Make Buttermilk
For every 1 cup of milk, stir in 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar. Let the mixture stand for 5 minutes. The acid will curdle the milk slightly. If the milk has not curdled, give it another 5 minutes.
If you have any leftover buttermilk substitute mixture, store it in an airtight container in the fridge. It will keep for about 3-4 days.
