What You will need for this recipe
Wet Ingredients:
Butter - Unsalted
Eggs - room temperature
Vanilla extract - Pure extracts enhance the flavors of baked goods.
Dry Ingredients:
Brown Sugar - light brown sugar
All-purpose Flour
Baking powder
Salt
Butterscotch chips - Caramel chips can be used
Optional Add-ins - Chopped pecans, macadamia nuts, and toffee bits.
Step By Step Instructions
- Heat oven to 350°F
- Spray the bottom and sides of the 13 x 9-inch cake pan with cooking spray
- In a saucepan, heat butter* over medium heat for 6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned. Pour into a small bowl, and cool for 10 minutes.
*(Why brown butter? It turns butter a brown color and takes on a deeper, nuttier flavor than regular melted butter. As the butter browns, you’ll notice there are bits at the bottom of the pan. These are good! They are actually milk solids that have cooked faster and will give even more flavor to your recipe. Don’t leave the bits behind. )
- In a large bowl mix brown sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Add eggs, and vanilla extract to the bowl with browned butter: stir with a whisk. Pour the butter mixture over the flour mixture, add butterscotch chips; stir just until moistened. Spoon batter into pan: smooth top with a spatula.
- Bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely in the cake pan on a cooling rack.
Even though these bars may not appear fully done. They will firm up once they've cooled around 1 hour.
